August 1972 and civil again ………
Maybe I should have stayed in the military at the time, but civilian life dragged on the most and instead of looking for a job, I walked around and enjoyed myself for a while, probably mostly because I had not yet fully recovered from the accident on a motorcycle. It still worked a little here and there and the headache lasted too long. I could not really get started with anything and it turned into a little life for borrowed money, all the while I had fun with the whole "team" at Vejlesø in Holte. Did not really dare drink anything, to the usual parties that were in the circle. Every time I got just 2-3 pieces I got ski´da as dizzy as if I had gotten 20. It must have been aftermath from the accident that controlled my head for quite some time after. The doctors had no good explanation, but over time I became "normal" in the tuber and could eventually participate in the daily hardships. Well, now "normal" is a pretty variable size and when you look at and hear about what the so-called "normal" people do in everyday life, then I feel great about hopefully being a little abnormal.
Had a good time and got the bright idea to take a business card for bus and taxi. It was now not as cumbersome as in today's Denmark, where you almost have to have a university degree to get a commercial driver's license.
Started right after New Year 72-73 and got a 2 hour drive in an old Bedford bus in the City Driving School at Nørreport. It broke well enough right up to the test, so the driving school borrowed an equally old Leyland bus at Copenhagen Tramways. Did not manage to try it until it was departure with the motor expert through the streets and alleys of Copenhagen. The theory test was taken after one week and together with the quick driving test, I now stood there with a business card for bus and taxi. So what ??
Well, there was "The Green Buses" in Hjortekær, owned by Svend Bojesen. I have used them from birth, so why not ask if you needed a pair of hands on the steering wheel
At about the same time, Knut, I and a couple of others from Vejlesø started joining a motorcycle club in Ballerup. It was called "222" and was named after the start date, 2 / 2-72 and then it was on Råmosevej 2. Over the years it became a fairly large club, with 120-130 active members. Has difficulty remembering all the names, but Eifel (Erik), Per Bruun, John Tand, Steen Anderson, Supernina and Dreyer, Steen Lykken, Flemming "Flemse", Benny Bruun, Sødeannie and Kawa-Aage then appear in the memory together with a lot of experiences for everyday and party. It turned into a number of years, standing on motorcycles, wild parties and lots of speed in everyday life, evenly distributed between "222" and Vejlesø in Holte. By the way, the club is no longer called "222", but "Oldtimers" or something like that, but is still located on Råmosevej 2.
Now you were young, beautiful and not least delicious at the time, so there was no shortage of attention in the bus from the sweet young ladies at the time. Ever wondered if it was because they then came for free that they were standing and talking to someone. Naaaaa, it was of course because you were young and beautiful, that's how it had to be. Otherwise, it then went beyond self-confidence.
And here it is that I should be able to remember a date. After all, there was one young lady who had especially called my attention. NoNo, nothing at all with a leather jacket or other attire that told me that here was one for the back seat. Long-haired and big-smiling wearing an Afghan fur, was probably not exactly something a Mc-rod had an eye for normally.
But when she kept sitting down, so she was always there in the mirror, we could just as well have a chat together. Maybe it was to drive for free, but now I never found out.
In 1973 it was then shown ………
Her name was Gitte and she was differently exciting and lovely, so it developed quite quickly into something closer, also outside the bus. We were so different that we simply had to put the pieces together and try life. Can not remember exactly when, but Gitte moved down to me, in the basement of my parents' house at Lundtoftevej 288, in Hjortekær, where the lower floor was furnished for our apartment.
Of course we would like more space, but it was more than impossible to find a vacant apartment in and around Kgs.Lyngby where we would like to stay. As it gradually dawned on us, we had to think alternatively.
My wife then, Gitte and I also got married during that period, during a big festivity after a church wedding in Lundtofte Church. Can also remember we had a nice car, a Trabant Station Wagon (just beware), which the guests had overpainted with shaving foam. It turned out later after car wash that the foam had etched itself into the paint (I do not use shaving foam anymore), so we then permanently sign with "Newlyweds" in front and behind, but without rattlesnakes in string after the car. The honeymoon days were held in a house in Asserbo, which family and friends had secretly rented to us. It was only when we had to run away in the evening that we were given some keys and a map in hand, with a route drawn in. Go Away and find a cabin, filled with all sorts of antics and food in the fridge.
Not long after, we were also going on our honeymoon that went to the Costa Brava and the town of Llorett de Mar. We stayed at a hotel called "Xaine Park". Cozy town, with sun, beach and a lot of fun for a couple of newlyweds. At the same time, one of our lovely acquaintances, Mona Ussing, also stayed at the hotel "Garbi Park" right next door. The same Mona met on the same trip her future husband, Josep Henriquez, who was a professional classical Spanish guitar musician. Has since been to several concerts with Josep and he can just be there with music. As far as I know, they still live in a suburb of Barcelona, Granollers is the name. But this has not been confirmed, as we have unfortunately been without contact for a long time. I have tried to find them in Granollers, during a holiday trip, but it proved impossible to track them down there, a little annoying.
After all, we had a place to stay, so there was no immediate need. So why not find something in Ballerup, where we came quite a lot in the "222" club. And yes, there were the "Stuvehøjgård" allotment gardens right up behind the clubhouse. These were gardens owned by Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality. So as citizens there, it was easy to come into consideration. We quickly got a garden and looked out for a house to build. It became a Ganløse house, where the company set up a raw house and then you had to arrange everything inside yourself.
Very nice and we built on life loose. But now we also found out that we had probably been a little naughty, at New Year's time, for 4 September 75, a little boy announced his arrival in our world. Remember it was the first time Gitte was waiting, so there was nothing planned, but nature wanted something else. Here ”Littlefart” was also the curious kind, like his father, for it should not have been until about a month later. But what else do you have trouble with..?
1978-1979
Curious as I once was I thought, why not? I drove out to the bus workshop the next day and got hold of the foreman, Frandsen. A quick talk and I started as a bus mechanic 2 weeks after. Oh well, now of course I had never tried to repair buses before, so I had to tighten my buttocks well and think carefully, because it was a slightly different mechanic instead of Morris Mascot and the like, I had been trained on for Many years ago. I am not quite sure of the names of my colleagues, but I remember Paul Larsen and Freddy Viholt, as well as their beautiful wives Gitte and Margrethe. We liked to meet after breakfast at Freddy's, where I had some of my training equipment standing in the basement, where we then "lifted iron" for a few hours to get bubbles on my upper arms before we went up and were pampered with a soda by lovely Margrethe . As far as I know now, Freddy later became the manager of the bus workshop on Columbusvej. Names like Jan Hansen, Willy and Finkas appear, but otherwise I remember many of the faces at the bus workshop.
But it went really well for 3 years, until 1982, together with the many lovely colleagues. But as always, I could not really calm down in the daily drum room to walk around on the same floor and in the same place every day. I had to find fresh air and started driving a bus again. I do not really understand what was constantly pulling me out on the roads of the bus, but it was probably the relaxed life behind the wheel that somehow got hold of me again and again.
During those years, I also could not calm down in the same bus for so long at a time. So there was a bit of a job change between De Grønne Busser, HT, Therkildsen's routes, BusDanmark and City Trafik. But right now it was "The Blue Omnibuses" in Holte that I was with. It was also close to Vejlesø and the friends there, where many hours were spent in ordinary laziness and parties.
Among these, "Norton-Polle" also appears, with the more bourgeois name Poul Jørgensen together with his sweet wife Maibritt. They lived in Bistrup near Birkerød and we had many wonderful hours together, not least on the roads where at that time it was only a matter of getting the fastest from A to B around P, or where we now whizzed in a seemingly pointless hunt for something. Among these, the club Birkerød MC was also visited at times when it was not at Vejlesø.
Well, in the middle of all the fun, I suddenly got the great idea to buy an Auto Repair Shop. Yes, why not – it's just as good as so much else. So I went hunting and suddenly I had signed a purchase agreement with the takeover of a well-located car workshop in a parking garage in Adelgade, Copenhagen. It was a couple of brothers who had run it well for many years, but now one wanted to stop. The deal went as planned, and I hired Børge, the youngest of the Mathiasson brothers.
It went really well, not least because of Børge, who clearly seemed like a magnet to the old customers. And an ad in the local newspaper, was almost too much of a good thing. The customers stood in the back of each other to have the car repaired. But it's not the worst thing that could happen, so it was often late at night before I got home from there. But the money was fine on the account, so I could set it aside a bit, to be able to realize my ideas about traveling around the world for a while. I had a number of "names" from the Danish film world as customers in the workshop, just as Lars von Trier came with his old worn Ford and had it repaired for little money. Fun to think back on.
After a year, I (as usual) wanted to try something new and put the workshop up for sale. After a short time, a buyer of foreign origin came, with pockets full of money. So the store changed hands and was filled with taxis, while the existing customers in this way were pressured to find another workshop. There had been a small article in local newspapers that said urban renewal and other similar initiatives that the local politicians came up with from time to time. Not very much, but my idea of the sale turned out to be good, as after only half a year, a blissful urban renewal was launched, which was the death of the many small craftsmen in the neighborhood.
So it was just about getting out to ride the bus again. It turned into a couple of years, without the really big fluctuations with super friends and acquaintances, not to forget my lovely parents and Super Sister Lizzie.
My Gran Canaria travels began in the latter half of the 70s and became a nice habit with at least 4 annual trips lasting 2-3 weeks. I usually lived in the cities of Puerto Rico, Patalavaca and Arguineguin on the south side of the island. It was the starting point for my trips around where I just relaxed and saw as much of the island as possible at the same time.
I have never set too many goals on the holiday trips, but took one day at a time. I often rented a car, or maybe I hopped on a local bus and drove out to see daily life with many experiences and impressions. The many Canary trips became almost everyday for me and I must not forget to say thank you to my employers for their incredible flexibility with my "inconvenient" holiday wishes in time and out of time. But now I was never afraid to give an extra hand if there was a driver shortage in the company. And at the same time, my health was top notch so I was never sick – lucky me!
I enjoy a lot of Harley driving in those years. Many meetings and meetings with like-minded people and not least the many Harley meetings in both Denmark and Sweden gave a good appetite for life. In Sweden there are places on Gotland, Saxtorp, Gävle, Jönköbing, High Chapparal and not least the Midsummer meeting in Skellefteå, I visited every year and had an invaluable community with friends there who will always have a warm spot in my memory.
It was late summer 1986 ………
But of course I got a wild idea again, what else? Had read a bit about Australia and seen a little movie about the country. So what else was there to do but apply for a permanent residence permit in the country so that I could live and work there indefinitely, just as I could stay there forever if it became my choice.
It took quite a long time to get a visa. It was a lot with lots of medical examinations and especially the wait until an Australian guy came to Denmark from Holland to Denmark. I had a meeting with him and it turned out that he wanted to give me a pretty comprehensive theoretical test in the Auto profession so he could issue a "certificate" as an Australian auto mechanic. Whole fat! I got it and still have it.
